Fade Away

September 2004 - Wonder Lake and the Alaska Range, Denali National Park

The morning was cold and crisp. There was a thin sheet of ice on the calmer water in the pond behind me. A few minutes earlier we had watched a moose walk down a trail on the left side of Wonder Lake but it was too dark to capture her. We were miles into the interior of Denali National Park and we were waiting for the first glimmer of sunrise on this beautiful mountain range.

It was already pretty in the pre-dawn light but we wanted the alpenglow, that beautiful pink that occurs with the first or last light. It was pretty quiet with small murmurs of photographic equipment being set or hushed discussions between fellow photographers. Mostly though it was the quiet of dawn, the peaceful time when even the breeze stops for a short while.

Then it happened, the sun rose and the glow started, the sound of shutter releases echoed softly in the air and some whispered about the beauty before us. For me, all sounds disappeared, it was just me, the camera and the mountain range, we were one and we would remain that way for at least 30 minutes until I came out of my self induced fog and again noticed the other photographers around me. It still amazes me how true beauty can make the rest of the world fade away.

This photo is a composite panoramic of 3 photos stitched together with Photoshop.

I am trying to play catch up on viewing your blogs. I have probably another night before I will be caught up. I still have a lot of work and tight timelines to meet for my job, so it might take me a while to respond to your comments or totally catch up with my watches. Please keep the comments coming though, I cherish every one. I will catch up on your blog posts as quickly as I can. Have fun shooting while I work :-).
